adventure in the woods and a hill-top picnic

Once upon a time, the 3 Griffin children were young, cute and amenable. Hair brushed, finest attire washed, ironed and ordered into, we were shipped off to a studio to have our portraits taken.

I’m looking at them now and wondering why the baby, my sister, got the full on special fake treatment whilst me and my older brother made do with a plain backdrop. (Yes, I have heard of middle child syndrome.) You see, they’ve placed her on a fake tree stump in front of a rural farmyard scene. There must have been something about her smock dress on the day that screamed little cowgirl to the photographer.

She seems very happy but all I see is the fake set-up. And it reminds me how happy I am to be able to offer my own clients today the real thing. Gorgeous, natural backdrops and stunning scenery to shoot in.

I love planning family sessions on location – spending time picking the right spot and choosing the best time of day to get great light. And when you work with a fabulous family, who are so much fun and up for something special then I can be sure I’m going to enjoy a brilliant session and capture something beautiful for them.

This session took us along a country lane and up a steep sandy hill in the (still quite) hot early evening sun. I’m not complaining though – I suggested it! On the top of a beautiful hill in the middle of Surrey, what better way is there to start a session than with cupcakes and strawberries?

She brought her own teddy bear to the picnic and enjoyed our adventure in the woods. Her Mum told me she was full of energy and into everything and she didn’t disappoint on the day. Curious about whatever she saw or found, happy to explore, quck to spot an opportunity to have fun – little V was such a fun character to photograph. She is why I love to work outside on location – why keep her sitting still in a studio? I can’t imagine her sat on a fake tree trunk and happy about it. Instead, our session was full of running, smiling, eating cakes, playing football and riding on her Daddy’s shoulders.

And even after all that running about, all those cheeky faces, she still found time to pause for a moment, look up and wonder what was going on with me.

With a gorgeous smile, beautiful unruly curls, she is so free-spirited and brave beyond her years – but she loves her Mummy and Daddy and would always return for a cuddle or three.

No fake tree stump for this one. She had the real thing – plus a Daddy to hold her hand along the way and a Mummy to cheer encouragement. She is brave, but I love the tenderness of her whole hand wrapped around Daddy’s finger.

She’s nearly there, almost at the top. But finds it too funny, all this climbing about business. Best stop for a little giggle and a short rest before the push to the top.

Thank you gorgeous girl for being so full of fun and adventure. I’ll try harder to keep up with you next time. Maybe I won’t start the session with a hike up a hill!

This session I was fed blueberry muffins. Next time, I’ve been promised a bacon sandwich on the beach. No sand thanks, just butter and ketchup in mine.

Brilliant!

congratulations are past due

We were all up early. The clock proves it.

Actually it was one of those very happy accidents of fate. Weather was looking decidely undecided on Saturday morning, so we switched to Sunday. As a reward for being a little bit patient we received the famous cobbled High Street of Guildford all to ourselves.

Not another soul or car to be seen in the usually busy, bustling centre of Guildford.

Well. After the very chatty dustmen moved on, and the wide-eyed runners strode past. After them, we had the place to ourselves.

I’m getting to quite enjoy these happy accidents. You see, if that lovely mum-to-be hadn’t approached me looking for a different style of maternity portrait, I wouldn’t be offering and loving them as I do now. We met and chatted and agreed that the Demi Moore style wasn’t quite our thing. So it was bumps out but boobs in. Which was a good decision, considering a lot of our maternity session was held out on location in Surrey.

This very happy couple waited past their due date and have just welcomed their little daughter into the world and I can’t wait to meet her. I know that session will be full of cuddles and coos and a lot of laughter. Why? Because these two do laughter really well.

They’ll be much more to follow from this session – and in the not so distant future you’ll be meeting the little girl who was hiding in that cute bump.

To Jo and Mark, many many congratulations and a huge thanks. Without you asking, I might not be shooting maternity portraits. And I can’t believe what I could have been missing out on.

To your little one – you lucky little girl. Welcome to the world.

Great work, Kate! Love the first image :)

dreaming of beaches

Remember this little beach boy?

Look at the attitude in that run. Kicking up the sand, shoulders back, chest forward. Always ready for action. Even on a early evening when he was feeling under the weather, he still had bags more energy than most. Much more than me anyway. I would have loved to capture him splashing about in the sea but his first few steps into the ocean were undone by a naughty wave that caught him unawares. But never mind, because his annoyance at the water gave me this gorgeous pout.

So sea was out of the question. How about a little late dinner? No can do I’m afraid. The seagulls got that.

Ok then. What else do you get at the beach? Oh yes. Sand.

Here he is discovering it. Great fistfuls of it. I think in the moment below an awareness passed between us. I looked in his little angelic face and saw the seed of an idea. He looked in mine and saw fear. Can’t you see him realise that this sand stuff can be picked up and thrown?

A little lightbulb hovering above his head wouldn’t be out of place.

He’s a good boy though. Once he’d thrown the sand, he wanted to clean it up. He wanted to clean the beach of sand. And that is a very tiring business.

So the sun really starts to dip. It gets chillier. And this gorgeous ball of energy and cuteness finally succumbs. It’s time to go home and stop somewhere to replace what the seagulls pinched.

To say I enjoyed this session is an understatement. I love the beach – it is one of my very favourite places to be. Not the crowded type – but the end of the day, smell of a bbq, hazy sunshine type of beach. So if you love it too and want to capture something beautiful in your family portraits, just shout. I know this great place where the beach is sandy and the water is cool.

Wow! These are stunning! He looks like he had a fab time :)

Kate

Thanks Katie – I certainly had fun following him around and avoiding the sand that came my way. He is such a character – and gorgeous to boot!

England lose, but have you won?

There are no words.

Not even the sweet sharpness of that disallowed goal to excuse ourselves. A German lashing. Woeful.

But…

For the purposes of this blog, who cares about the winner of the match? We just care about goals, right? And England scored didn’t they? Twice by my reckoning. So don’t feel down. You could have a free mini session to plan!

Everyone who entered was given a number in the order they left a comment. Let’s press the random number generator and see who the lucky winners are…drumroll please…

Lucky numbers 10 and 5 – Well done Evita and Lucy! You’ve both won a MINI SESSION and 7X5 print. I hope that takes the edge off England crashing out of the World Cup. Please send me an email (kate@kategriffinphotography.com) to claim your prize and we can start talking about your fabulous portrait sessions!

For everyone else who entered – don’t look so glum! I have lovely little £20 gift cards for each and everyone of you! If you want to take advantage of this little gift, please contact me before July 31st 2010 to redeem your gift card against your session fee.

Dry your tears England. Now, COME ON MURRAY!!!

come on england

Vuvuzelas at the ready? Good. But if you don’t know what they are, even better. Because this new competition is all about making the World Cup work for those of you who couldn’t care less about football.

After slowly melting in yesterday’s heat and cheering on our boys in red, I thought that it would be fun to have a competition that celebrated England’s progession into the final 16. If that means nothing to you, don’t worry. Here’s how I’ll get you to care…

For every goal that England score from now on, I’ll be giving away a FREE MINI SESSION and a 7×5 print. That’s a win for you worth £80. Plus our next match is against Germany, so that offer includes the inevitable penalties as well.

There’s no limit to the wins – so if England go on and on and keep scoring, I’ll be giving away as many mini sessions as there are England goals.

What is a mini session?

Mini sessions are the perfect choice for portraits of individual children. This custom photography session is designed to capture them in a relaxed, unrushed atmosphere being themselves and having fun. It will last approximately 1 hour at a beautiful outside location and will result in 8 fully edited proofs to choose from.

Why not take a look at the featured mini session on the portfolio site to see how a natural contemporary style can capture beautifully unique images of your child.

Who can enter?

Open to all, no matter where you live. But please note though that all sessions will take place in and around Guildford, Surrey. I’ll give you a few glorious locations to choose from. All sessions should be booked and scheduled before August 31st 2010.

How do I enter?

Simple. To enter all you have to do is ”like” my facebook page and then leave a comment below this post.

You can also share the news by tweeting about it or sharing on facebook. I’ve made it super easy for you – just click the twitter and facebook buttons on the bar below to spread the word about this great prize draw.

That’s it.

So when you’re asking your loved one about whether we’ve scored any goals yet, don’t be surprised that they can’t believe you’re finally showing an interest! And for those of you who are already sucked in to football fanatacism, this is just an extra thing to shout about.

Winners will be chosen at random following England’s final match in the World Cup. You can enter at any time up to our exit from the competition. Don’t forget to tell your friends too – they’ll want to take part. Hopefully there will be loads of free mini sessions on offer!

Here’s an image from a recent beach session – don’t you think he’s a little footballer in the making?

More from his curly-haired session soon.

Now repeat after me: Come On England, Come On England!
